You probably heard the beats Kanye West, Timbaland or Dr.Dre are producing and ask yourself: how is it that they make such good music everytime? It’s really easy to answer. First, every successful producer has his own style. Timbaland for example, uses busy drums and percussions to make his beats sound special and different from the others. But most important, people can easily recognize his productions. Second, he has a certain reputation, built on the many hits he made with other artists, like Aliyah or Justin Timberlake, for example. This reputation of a hit maker allows his music to be played on every radio station and music channel instantly because people know the songs he produced and they liked the old songs, so they are excited to hear his new masterpiece.
But that’s not all, there are some good news. Big producers usually don’t make all their beats by themselves. They hire underground producers to help them out and take off some work off their shoulders. As you might have noticed, not only the big names in the industry can produce hot rap beats, there are tons of unknown people who are extremely good at making music. Take a look on the YouTube channels of some not well known producers, then you’ll see what I mean.
The point is, you also can make hot beats that can compete with the big people, even if you don’t have made a reputation for yourself yet. This will come, don’t worry. With the internet, the opportunities are endless. YouTube, MySpace, Twitter, all these sites offer you the chance to get your music out there and reach people. I know many hobby producers who are now selling their music on beat selling sites and even on iTunes, making some decent money with their hobby and getting a name in the industry.
„That’s all good, but how to get started?“ you might ask. Well, first you’ll need a music maker software. The ones I have made good experiences with, are DUBturbo and Fruity Loops. They both aren’t for free, so I recommend you to download the demo first and experiment with it a little bit before deciding to purchase a program. Look if the suit your needs and style. If you are looking for a free solution, check out Krystal Audio Engine. It’s more complicated than the others and if you are a beginner, you might have difficulties to work with it, but it’s worth a look. The next step, after you found the right software for you, is to get familiar with the basics of music theory and the structures of the music in your genre. Check out some YouTube tutorials for that.
So, for the start this is enough information. Get some experience with this and try making your own music, but don’t forget to have fun! I wish you all good on your way to the top!
